We recently had this little girl in the studio for her portrait.
Her parents regularly bring her in for an updated studio based portrait as she transforms from a toddler into a young lady. We have previously photographed her on a white background in a high-key style and today we went for a pale blue background to give a different look.
We are moving away from the white background, it has been well done for a while now, and I’m firmly of the belief that childrens studio photography works much better with a coloured background either to compliment clothing, skin and hair colouring, or even the room decor where the resulting framed photographs or canvas wraps might hang, particularly if B&W is a real consideration. It also allows the use of much more creative and artistic lighting which we will be working on with some shoots over the coming weeks – and almost impossibility to do with flat and bright white background work. Combine that with some outdoor location based session around Hampshire and there really is no need to isolate children on a white backdrop.
So here are a couple of images from the studio session – one in colour and one in black and white
