Exhausted after a long day at sea I couldn’t resist getting some of these images up from todays 2012 Round the Island Race where I was shooting some marine photography of the competitors yachts throughout the race.

The day started early with a 4:30am departure from Gosport Marina in a 51 ft Swan yacht which was to be my base for the day. We motored out to the start and caught some of the first classes at about 7am, including Dark Star complete with Dame Ellen MacArthur aboard, before heading along the Solent to The Needles chasing the elegant 162 ft schooner Eleanora co-helmed by Ben Ainslie.

She proved too fast for us, and we held at The Needles and allowed the fleet to come past us before we headed back to the start / finish to capture many of the returning yachts as they came to the line.

Here are a few of the images which initially caught my eye, and I’ll be doing a longer edit in the coming days.
